Hi Pat. Nice blog. I am the Co-Inventor of ACT! and its companies Co-Founder, so ACT! is my child....

22 years on the market and people like you still benefitting from it. It set, and has retained all these years, the standard of what a Contact Manager is.

If you care to reach me, I can be found at either www.MikeMuhney.com, or on Twitter at @MikeMuhney (which you already know because we are following each other).

Lastly, like any parent I am protective of my child. The correct spelling is ACT! :-)

Take care, Mike

Here's another neat trick - if there's a search you have to do over and over, do it once, then when Google returns in the address bar you will have Google's "formal" search - for example I searched for my hometown of Agawam and got:

http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS284&=&q=Agawam&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g10

Then you can drag it to your 'bookmarks toolbar' (well that's what it's called in Firefox) where all you have to do is click on it. The 'bookmarks' toolbar can contain any book mark, a "folder" of bookmarks, or even a "bookmarklet" - a URL which begins with "javascript:" as the protocol and which contains a small javascript program (see Jon Udell, LibraryLookup for a good example of a bookamrklet)

In my organization (state government) what I've seen is that training is superficial: here's how to add an appointment, here's how to send an e-mail. Meetings? Oh that's the "Intermediate" class! Or else, "Well I don't organize meetings so I won't listen to that part". Then they later transfer, get promoted, or whatever and don't have the skills.

Here's another one (may be specific to Outlook): you can create a calendar for just a specific project. If you do, then the appointments on it work for milestones, timelines, etc. (you can use journals for this also). The data entry is then proper for date/time info and is obviously chronological... as opposed to what most people do which is type it into a spreadsheet and move rows around in a futile attempt to keep it straight.
